Oh goodness gracious, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you're a Vancouverite, you'll know what I'm talking about. Last night & today was just CRAZINESS in the world of sports.
Thought that I should give y'all a heads up @ this pnt... the rest of the post is definitely not going to flow. There's so much going through my head that I haven't actually organized anything in there yet. Thoughts are running left & right @ an amazing speed.
According to all media outlets, the
Canucks' game vs. the Avalanche was to be the game of the yr--playoff calibre. Boy, were they ever WRONG! They couldn't be anymore wrong. I didn't get a chance to catch the whole game because I've gotta share the TV w/ my dad, but when I checked the score, it was already 6-2. WTF!?!
Long story short, I didn't even see the hit live, but was I ever shocked when I saw the highlights on
Sportsnet w/
Don Taylor. Plain & simple... Bert sucker puched Moore & that definitely is NOT cool. What I saw on TV was just plain crazy. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes. I follow the Canucks (on somewhat of a superficial & surface manner) & even for Bert, that was a LOW move. I mean, everyone in Vancouver knows that he's the biggest guy on the team & it can hurt if he hits you etc. We all know that he has a bad temper & when he loses it, he makes stupid moves & gets penalties, but he has never done anything like that before.
& poor Steve Moore... all that blood on the ice & now we find out that he has a deep facial laceration, a concussion & 2 broken vertibraes. What a tragic conclusion to that game. 9-2. What else can I say except that the Canucks displayed extremely poor sportsmanship. There was an obscene amt of fighting even PRIOR to the Bert hit. Overall, it was just a digusting game.
Just look @ the progression! Crazy I tell you!
hOwever, apart from ranting about how disturbing these turn of events ended up being, I'm a little annoyed at how these events have been portrayed by the media. Ok, as a
CMNS grad, I should know what the role of the media is & how it presents their stories, but I still can't help but be irked by this story.
I'm not huge on listening to talk radio, but because of this story, while driving home from the
ASI Exchange I listened to
NW &
Team 1040. NW was just reporting the news & what was happening etc. On Team 1040, Taylor & Pratt were talking about the incident. Now, I've always been a fan of Don Taylor in the past. I enjoy his work. However, I had never been so disgusted by his work as I was yesterday. Granted, emotions were running high from everyone, me included. I just couldn't believe how narrow minded he was being. He stated his opinion as facts & both Taylor & Pratt pretty much accused Bert's supporters as needing to get their heads checked. Fucking open your mind up a little more! GAWD.
Look, I'm not saying that what Bert did wasn't wrong. Anyone in their right mind has to be able to see that the sucker punch was wrong, irresponsible & crossed the line. However, I cannot stand ppl using the word broken neck & premeditated. The media is using these words, which just makes everything seem much worse off than it is. Moore has 2 broken vertabrae. I don't wanna downplay the injuries, because they are incredibly serious, but this does not mean that Moore will be paralyzed. Of course there is a chance that his career has come to an end, but there's also the possibility that he will be @ training camp this summer. Premeditated. Ok, Bert's intention of sucker punching him or hitting him was obviously premeditated. He was chasing him around the ice prior to the incident. However, using premeditated makes it seem that Bert's intention from the beginning was to knock Moore down & seriously injure him. I doubt that. Bert is not an enforcer. this type of event is out of his nature.
You have to love how the media likes to grasp on to the negative sides of all stories & paints a picture that's not necessarily accurate for their audience.
I feel bad for Bert. I'm sure that not once did he think that the punch would lead to this kind of outcome. One thing that bugs me is that I can't tell if he pushed Moore down to the ice, or if he just fell on top of him because Moore collapsed upon impact. I'd like to think the latter... & it also doesn't help that the Avalanche players then jumped on top of Bert who was on top of Moore. That just doesn't help the matters.
It's unfortunate that things played out the way they did. I can guarantee you that media would not have jumped on top of this story as much if Moore just suffered a concussion or a broken arm/leg. It's because of all the blood & the broken vertebraes that the story has exploded into what it is. It's the 1st story for every single media outlet across teh country right now, whether it's the local news or CTV News @ 11 or The National on CBC.
Bert faces an NHL hearing tomorrow. I wish him all the luck. He deserves to be suspended for the rest of the season, there's no doubt in my mind. He was irresponsible & must take responsiblity for his actions, but I don't think he should get what McSorley got.
