What a bunch of "morose motherfuckers"
I would sorta be lying if I wasn't waiting for Hanson to post about the Kevin Smith Q&A first. I was originally going to post yesterday, but after two busy, busy days, I decided to hold off until today, so I could do it at work. Yes, unlike a lot of you... work right now for me is SLOW. More often than none, I'm working harder at trying to find work than actually doing any "billable" work. *sigh*
Anyhow, what can I say about the Kevin Smith Q&A that Hanson already hasn't? Not much. But it was FUCKING amazing. Definitely one of the highlights of my life! Yes, I don't lead the most exciting lives, but you've gotta understand... I absolutely LOVE Kevin Smith. Not in the, "OMG.... he's so cute, I want to marry him & bear his children!" I admire him grately. I think he's an amazing story teller and movie maker. He's smart, witty... I could seriously go on.
Before I start on my semi-review, I would just like to publicly announce what a fantabulous person Hanson is! My brother and I were probably about 20 ppl behind him in the line-up. Wasn't expecting him to say to me, "Why don't you budge in line w/ us?" or what not. I have a REALLY crappy, but VERY new cell phone, which I can never hear when it's ringing. Anyway, when Hanson & Carlos got their seats in the front row, Hanson saved two extra seats for me & my broham!!! Not only did he leave me a msg on my cell... he came looking for me!!! What an awesome dude! BUT, alas, I turned down his favour for my 6th row centre. I'm sure Hanson thought that I was pyscho for turning down row 1... Well, here's the reason, if you read my post about how I was a bootlegging fiend at the Esthero concert... I knew that Kevin wouldn't really appreciate the whole bootlegging thing, but I really wanted to have a copy of the show for reference. I fig'd it wouldn't be too good if I was sitting in the first row & then getting caught by Kevin, then getting reamed out & bitch slapped by Kevin & then booted out of the show. Can't say that would be too much fun... call me crazy, if you will.
Anyhow... surprisingly doors did open at 5:30 p.m. as promised. Kevin's wife Jen & her best friend & Affleck's assistant, Chay checked ppl in at the door. Not to knock Chay or anything... I was hoping to have Jen check us in. Granted... w/ that said, I didn't even realize that it was Jen until AFTER the fact. Kept thinking that she was a brunette. It was about 5:45 p.m. by the time we got our wristbands and our seats & only got up once from that pnt on until 1 a.m. Yeah... I was on my frigging ass for over 7 hours! That was probably one of the "low" pnts of the evening - although I can't totally complain. I mean, the man did devote nearly 6 hours of his attn to us Vancouverites!
So... what were my fave moments? Hard to say as the whole damn thing was so entertaining! So, here's my top three moments in no particular order:
- Affleck story - I know that "celebrities" are just like you & me, but it still cool to know that Kevin goes through the same shit that I do.
- Mewe's rehab - what a heartfelt and inspiring story. Gotta say... wish I had a friend that would go to the depths that Kevin has. Jason went through HELL & I'm thrilled to hear that he's cool now. Although the Falcon's Lair really is sorta "gay." ;)
- Degrassi - Majority of Kevin Smith fans know about his obsession w/ Degrassi, but $3,000 US for the tapes!?! That's just crazy!
Lowlight? The frigging non-stop hocking/pitching of story ideas, DVDs, scripts, etc. Don't get me wrong, I totally understand why they would... What other opportunity do you have to pitch to someone who has "power" or connections in the industry. But there's a way to do it and there's a way not to. Sadly, 95% of the VFS students did it the wrong way - esp. the dude who wants Kevin to make Generation X. WTF!?! First off... why wouldn't Doug Coupland find someone himself? It's not like he's not in the industry...
Oh... one other note, wish he didn't hate Jersey Girl as much as he does. i thought it was a fanastic movie. It just sucks ass that it had to come out after Gigli.
So... when is the next Q&A?
*Ed. note* Of course Murphy Law takes place right after I rant about not having work... I started this entry @ 1 p.m. & it's now past 4 p.m. & I haven't left the office for lunch. :(
